Land Rover TD6 3.0D

After the heavy snows of winter 2009-2010, I bought a 2002 Range Rover TD6 SE to ensure that I would not get stuck in future years. At the time of purchase, the car’s trip computer was showing 22mpg, but in my hands, with a big hill between my home and my place of work, the vehicle was doing 18.7mpg.

After taking some time to explore the performance of the car, I realised it was never getting out of third gear for the whole commute.

Clearly, the engine was not suited to what was being asked of it. It was time for a Rapid Remap.

I took the truck to Cannock, where Mike of Rapid Remap listened to my requirements and suggested a combined power and economy remap to get better fuel miles and increase torque to allow the gearbox to give up its love affair with third and get acquainted with fourth and fifth.

After an hour or so of careful work designing the new ECU data map, the car was ready to go on its test drive.

I noticed an immediate difference in torque, quicker transition up the gears and greater sensitivity of the auto box to backing off the throttle.

This was not surprising, but the fuel miles on the return journey were. On the way down to Cannock, the TD6 had burned fuel at a rate of 30.4mpg.

On the way back, it did 36.7mpg.

On the daily commute, the car took a week or so to settle down, but once it had, it was doing 22.5mpg. That works out as a 20.3% improvement, or a day’s free driving per week.
