There are 3 common methods used to update the software in your ECU (Engine Control Unit)

The end result is the same only the actual method varies.

This is possibly the most commonly used terminology, and refers to the process of removing (sometimes de-soldering) one or more memory chips from the ECU and either reprogramming or replacing them with new chips.

Involves removing the ECU from the vehicle in the same way as you would for chip tuning, however instead of actually de-soldering a chip from the ECU, the required software files are accessed via the reading points

Remapping

Involves reading and writing files to and from the ECU via the vehicles OBD (Diagnostic Port) This method avoids the need to remove the ECU from the vehicle.

Remapping via the OBD is not technically possible on some vehicles.

The results achieved are relative to the quality of the software programing rather than the method used to read and write the file to and from the ECU

The quality of the software file produced for your vehicle is the most important factor relating to the performance of your engine.
