Technical

There are 3 common methods used to update the software in your ECU (Engine Control Unit) The end result is the same only the actual method varies.

This is possibly the most commonly used terminology, and refers to the process of removing (sometimes de-soldering) one or more memory chips from the ECU and either reprogramming them with updated software or replacing them with entirely new chips.

Involves removing the ECU from the vehicle in the same way as you would for chip tuning, however instead of actually de-soldering a chip from the ECU, the required software files are accessed via the reading points on the pcb - a BDM device is required for this method

Involves reading and writing files to and from the ECU via the vehicles OBD (Diagnostic Port) This method avoids the need to remove the ECU from the vehicle.

Remapping via the OBD is not technically possible on some vehicles, when this is the case one of the methods detailed above is used.

In some cases vehicles cannot be remapped at all.

The method used will usually be dictated by the vehicle in question and whilst OBD remapping is viable on a wide range of modern vehicles, it is not possible on some in which case another method is required.

OBD Remapping is usually the quickest option, although the actual results will be the same regardless of the method used.

The actual results achieved are relative to the quality of the software programming rather than the method used to read and write the file to and from the ECU.

Why don't manufacturers offer this

The mass-produced modern car engine generally has a number of restrictions, because of the requirement to meet a wide variety of real world operating conditions, such as variations in manufacturing tolerances, fuel quality, climatic conditions, and poor maintenance.

As a result of the restrictions your vehicle is supplied with, the one size fits all characteristics of a standard engine there is significant scope for improvement.

Poor low speed response and mid-range flat-spots can be eliminated, with a very noticeable improvement in overall performance and impressive fuel efficiency gains.

Modern Tuning" is not just about raising power and torque output, but equally about optimising the efficiency of the engine.

Tuning that was once considered the domain of the boy racer is now offering mainstream vehicle owners real world benefits, and is rapidly growing in popularity
